Shalom            שלום

Cultural night at the halau wa`a with “Team Israel” was most informative and enjoyable.  We started the evening with a little bit about Kalo and Haloanaka and `ohana.  Then we ventured to another distant and historical Place, Israel..

Amir, Nitsan, Guy & Shai, along with their families, made another part of the world come alive for the rest of us.  They shared stories of their homeland, their childhood and adult experiences.  Of what they do for fun and what is required by the military.

We also learned some phrases that we can use:
Shalom: Hello/goodbye;
Toda: Thank you;
Mazal Tov: good luck, congratulations &
Sababa – great/cool/good.

Following their sharing of knowledge and life stories we all were fortunate to be able to enjoy the food that they laboriously made for all of us.  It was so good.  Toda also to the Zwick’s for their contribution that evening.
It was very SABABA!

KOKUA KOKUA KOKUA KOKUA KOKUA KOKUA

Okay.  So have read this newsletter and thought; gee, I really enjoyed that, I like reading about our club and `ohana, but hmmm, it was mostly written by one person, I’d like to hear from others.

Oh…   I think I want to write a little something for the next one or I think I may even have time to be the editor….  So if any of these thoughts made their way in and through your brain… give me a call or email or letter and let me know how you want to KOKUA.

Yes the thoughts expressed in this letter are MINE. (except for Ms. Murf bu)

  Paddling in the "Off" Season

Paddling – a year round activity.  Our canoes are on the water 5 days a week and sometimes twice in a day.  The morning crew is on surf patrol, the afternoon crew looks for the wind and the MIL paddlers are training hard.

LUOK is hosting Maui and Saint Anthony High Schools.  SA alumni, Lani Gomes & Ricky are coaching the SA kids - predominately JV.  We’ll see if there are enough to make it into and through the season.
Recreation paddling: Tue/Thurs 6:15 – 7:15am
Wed/Fri 5pm

Big MAHALO to David Divin for stepping forward to run the afternoon sessions.  Dave was trained well by Jim Hedani as safety of & for paddlers and the equipment are always priorities.

We sure miss Jim and hope his schedule will allow him to soon return.

From our teen correspondent…
                      Shaunessy Nascimento

I have been coming out in the mornings for recreational practice.  It has been a blast paddling with the older paddlers!

It’s dark when we go out and I can barely see.  Suddenly the boat lifts up, and we’re speeding along, in the dark, surfing.  It was scary in the beginning, but I got used to it, and now it’s exciting.  Last week, the moon lit up the water like a painting.  It was striking.
I’m learning to canurf (canoe surf).  It is NOT easy to catch, or stay on the wave.  I think I’m getting better.  I’m blessed to be taught by pro canurfers!

I also paddle MIL for Maui High School, and I am being coached by Johnny Mac.  His coaching style is very different from our coaches.  He’s nice, but can be crazy at times, like making us paddle to the harbor by ourselves.  I’m gonna steer the Varsity Girls team, because I’m the only steersman.  I’m also the only freshman.
Rec helps me to be better for MIL. Because I paddle both, I now paddle 5 days a week.

By the time regatta season starts, I going be murf bu!

Regarding Recreational Paddling…

Schedule for full moons…2/1 (Thurs)    3/3 (Sat)    4/2 (Mon)    5/2 (Wed)     and...
