Paddling by Joy Balinbin

Joy Balinbin, Lae'ula O Kai Paddler
“Time for practice!”  These words remind me of paddling season.  My Auntie paddles too, so that’s part of why I got into the sport.  I practice at Kanaha Beach Park, and I have lots of friends there.

When I go to practice, we have a routine.  First I drink water before we go into the ocean.  Then we run, stretch, and sometimes when Auntie Sharon comes we also do Pilates stretches.

Once we get into the water, we practice water changes, where you jump out of the boat for a few minutes, then go back in.  It seems easy, but it is hard!

Auntie Mary and Auntie Sharon run the children practices and my Auntie Rosela comes and helps with practice too.

When some of us are not in the canoe, we do more water exercises like back floats, sprints, we even swim to the buoy and back.

Paddling is a fun sport for me because I love going to practice and being in the water.

Recycle for LUOK

Kelly CuaWhat's better than recycling to save the environment? Recycling to help Lae `Ula o Kai!

Lae `Ula o Kai has just joined the list of non-profits that can benefit from recycling your bottles and cans at Aloha Recycling - right down the road from us.

All you have to do is save those cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles and take them to Aloha Recycling.  When you get there tell the attendant that you'd like to donate the money to Lae `Ula o Kai. The entire 5 cent redemption fee will go to the club.  Make sure to ask for your receipt & keep it for tax purposes...this can count towards your deductions.

Now, during the month of October, Aloha Recycling is running it's bi-annual contest.  So, in addition to your 5cents/item donation Aloha Recycling will give bonuses to each non-profit as follows.

$100 - $199 raised equals $10 bonus.
$200 - $299 raised equals  $25 bonus
$300 - $399 raised equals  $50 bonus
$400 - $499 raised equals  $75 bonus
$500 +         raised equals $100 bonus

On top of this generous bonus, we can earn even more money if we are one of the top three donation getting groups.

1st Prize is $500
2nd Prize is $300
3rd Prize is $150

So...save those bottles & cans.  This could be one of the easiest fundraisers ever.  :)
